Beyond the Chat

This September, Lock & Talk Virginia is going Beyond the Chat.
Young people are already using AI to study, write, think out loud, and sometimes to work through hard feelings. Technology can be part of your support system. It does not have to be your whole support system. This campaign is about keeping a real person in the conversation.
AI Can Help. People Heal.
AI can help you:
- Find information
- Sort out your thoughts
- Practice a hard conversation
- Explore ways to handle stress
- Figure out what to ask a doctor or counselor
People can help you:
- Understand what you are going through
- Know your history
- Notice when something has changed
- Make decisions with you
- Show up and stay
You can use both. Just do not use AI alone for the things that matter most.
What We Know
A 2025 study in Scientific Reports tested 29 AI chatbot apps against a standardized set of prompts designed to simulate rising suicide risk. None of them met the researchers' bar for an adequate response, with 14 rated inadequate and 15 rated marginal. A 2026 review reached a similar conclusion, finding that commercial chatbots built without clinical design showed a near-universal failure to respond adequately in a crisis. The response has been fast. A growing number of states now require chatbot operators to recognize expressions of suicidal thoughts or self-harm and point users toward resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
There is also a design issue worth knowing about. Many chatbots are built to agree with you and validate whatever you say, because that keeps people coming back. The American Psychological Association has warned that this can be harmful when someone is struggling. A person who cares about you will tell you the truth instead. That difference matters.
Find Your Words
You do not have to know what to say. Just start:
"Can I talk to you about something?"
"I have been having a hard time lately, and I do not really know what I need."
"You have seemed quiet. How are you actually doing?"
Think of your top 3. Who could you go to when life gets hard? A friend, parent, teacher, coach, counselor, or another trusted adult. Save their names in your phone before you need them.
Lock It Up, Then Talk It Out
Conversation is one layer of prevention. Time and space are another. Secure storage puts distance between a hard moment and access to lethal means, which gives a conversation the chance to happen. Free safety devices are available through your local community services board.

Lock & Talk Virginia | September 2026
Post 1 - Campaign Launch (Sept 1)
This September, we are going Beyond the Chat. AI can help answer questions and organize your thoughts, but it doesn't know your whole story—and your story deserves real conversation with people who care. Technology can be part of your support system, but it does not replace real human connection and support. Join us all month as we talk about connection, hope, and how to be there for each other, and if something feels heavy, start a real conversation with someone you trust. #BeyondTheChat
Post 2 - Real People, Real Help (Sept 8)
A chatbot can reply to you, but only a person can truly respond to you. AI can offer information and ideas. People can listen, understand your story, and help you through what comes next. Your story deserves a real person on the other end. #BeyondTheChat
Post 3 - World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept 10)
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Here’s something worth remembering: when you're going through a hard moment: difficult moments can change, and reaching out can help. So go beyond the chat today by checking on your people face to face and asking the real question. And if you are the one struggling, tell someone real, whether it is a friend, a parent, a coach, or a counselor at 988, because a screen can hold your words, but a person can help you carry them. Your story is not over. #WSPD #BeyondTheChat
Post 4 - AI Myth vs Reality, Video 1 (Sept 14)
MYTH: "AI understands me better than people do." REALITY: AI can respond to what you share, but people who know you can bring your history, experiences, and relationship with them into the conversation. A chatbot can sound caring, yet it cannot sit beside you, check on you tomorrow, or truly know your story. AI can help you organize your thoughts, but people are who help you heal, so watch this, then go have a real conversation. #BeyondTheChat

Post 5 - Means Safety (Sept 17)
Conversation is part of prevention. So is creating time and space between a crisis and access to lethal means. Free medication and firearm safety devices are available through your local community services board, so lock it up, then talk it out. #BeyondTheChat
Post 6 - AI Myth vs Reality, Video 2 (Sept 21)
MYTH: "Nobody wants to hear my story." REALITY: The people who love you want to know the real you, hard chapters included. If typing it out feels easier than saying it out loud, that is a fine place to start, and you do not have to stop using AI. You just have to add a person to the conversation. #BeyondTheChat

Post 7 - Conversation Cards (Sept 25)
If AI disappeared tomorrow, who would you talk to? That is just one of the questions in our free conversation cards, which are made to carry you beyond "I'm fine" and into the real talks that matter. Download them, print them, and try one at dinner tonight, because someone's story is waiting to be heard. #BeyondTheChat
Post 8 - Closing Post (Sept 30)
Suicide Prevention Month ends today, but your story keeps going, and it deserves real conversation every month of the year. Keep checking on your people, and keep talking to the ones who know you best, whether that is your friends, your family, your coaches, or your counselors. Keep your home safe with secure storage, and keep 988 in your phone for the moments that need more. #BeyondTheChat
